Pre-Season League One Predictions for 2025/26

The League One season starts this weekend, and we’re predicting some of the end-of-season outcomes for what’s sure to be another exciting season. There are a lot of big teams in the league, including Luton Town, who were in the Premier League just two seasons ago, and Cardiff City, who are in League One for the first time in 22 seasons.

Who will win League One this Season?

I’m backing newly relegated, and favourites for the league win, Luton Town to bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking by winning the league. They had a terrible season last time out, but with their late form, they were incredibly unlucky to be relegated from the Championship. In their last 12 games, they won six, drew three and lost three. Ultimately, they were relegated very harshly on goal difference. There was no big rebuild required for the Hatters this season, with plenty of quality in the squad from the previous Championship campaign. I think it’ll be tight at the top, but I’m backing them to finish the season as champions. They’re 3/1 to win the league with Bet365. BET ON LUTON

League One Promotion Predictions

The next pick is a slight outsider – I’m going with Stockport County, who come in at 9/2 to finish in the top two. County, who coincidentally share their nickname ‘The Hatters’ with the aforementioned Luton Town, finished third behind big spenders Birmingham City and Wrexham last season. They have been very consistent, and if it wasn’t for a dip in form around Christmas time, they could have gained automatic promotion against the odds. They finished five points behind Wrexham in second last season, and I think they’re a good bet for automatic promotion this time around. BET ON STOCKPORT

League One Top Scorer Prediction 2025/26 – who will be the main man?

I can’t see past Alfie May to finish top goalscorer this season in the blue and white of Huddersfield – he’s in at 5/1 with Bet365. He bagged 16 goals last season in his 44 appearances for Birmingham, and has 89 League One goals to his name in 248 appearances. In 23/24, while at Charlton, he finished the league’s top goalscorer with 23 goals in 43 appearances. Despite being favourite, I think 5/1 is decent odds. There are a few other honourable mentions, however. David Keillor-Dunn had a high-scoring season last season, with 18 goals in 45 appearances. He is 18/1 to be top scorer this season. Luton Town will need goals from somewhere if my prediction for them to win the league comes to fruition. 35 year old Nahki Wells might be coming to the end of his career, but he could be in with a chance if he’s starting most weeks for a team that will create chances. He’s 18/1 with Bet365. Paul Mullin of Wigan is 20/1, Lincoln City’s James Collins is 25/1, and Yousef Salech of Cardiff comes in at 9/1. All are worth a look, but I’m backing Alfie May to be the highest scorer in the division this season. BET ON ALFIE MAY

League One Relegation Predictions this Season

It’s difficult to see past Wimbledon being relegated this season – they are even money to go down with Bet365. A strong back line was enough to see them promoted from League Two via the play-offs last season, but they haven’t managed to secure the signing of the on-loan goalkeeper from last season, Owen Goodman. They still have a strong defence, however, and it will be their lack of goals that will be their downfall this campaign. They only managed 56 goals last season, with Matty Stevens scoring 17 of them, and no other player scoring more than six. Despite Stevens’ good goal record overall, he only managed one goal in their last 19 league matches. It’ll be very difficult for them to stay up, and I don’t think they’ll manage to beat the drop. I also think Exeter City are strong relegation candidates this season. Gary Caldwell’s side have one of the smallest budgets in the division, and it’s difficult to see them pulling off results against many, if any, of the division’s bigger teams. They’ll be down there and could head into League 2. They’re 7/4 with Bet365 to go down. BET ON RELEGATION
