Over/under goals is a football betting market where you predict whether the total number of goals in a match will be above or below a line set by the bookmaker. The result, the scoreline and which team wins are all irrelevant – only the total number of goals scored by both teams combined matters.
Over 2.5 goals wins if three or more goals are scored. Under 2.5 goals wins if two or fewer are scored. That is the entire concept.
Why .5? Why Not Whole Numbers?
Every over/under goals line uses a half-goal: 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, and so on. This is deliberate. Because you cannot score half a goal in football, the .5 makes it impossible for the bet to land exactly on the line. The result is always a clear win or loss – there is no push, no void, no refund.
If bookmakers used whole numbers (Over 2 goals, for example), they would need a third outcome for exactly 2 goals, which would complicate the market. The .5 removes that problem entirely and keeps over/under a straightforward two-way bet.
Over/Under Goals – Every Line Explained
| Line | Over wins if… | Under wins if… |
|---|---|---|
| Over/Under 0.5 | 1+ goals scored | 0-0 |
| Over/Under 1.5 | 2+ goals scored | 0 or 1 goal total |
| Over/Under 2.5 | 3+ goals scored | 0, 1 or 2 goals total |
| Over/Under 3.5 | 4+ goals scored | 0, 1, 2 or 3 goals total |
| Over/Under 4.5 | 5+ goals scored | 4 or fewer goals total |
| Over/Under 5.5 | 6+ goals scored | 5 or fewer goals total |
The simple rule: take the number and add 0.5 to find the minimum goals needed for the over to win. Over 2.5 needs 3 goals. Over 3.5 needs 4. Over 4.5 needs 5.
Over/Under Goals Examples
Over 2.5 goals – winning bet: Manchester City vs Arsenal ends 2-1. Total goals: 3. Three is more than 2.5. Over 2.5 wins.
Over 2.5 goals – losing bet: Chelsea vs Tottenham ends 1-0. Total goals: 1. One is less than 2.5. Over 2.5 loses.
Under 2.5 goals – winning bet: Liverpool vs Everton ends 1-0. Total goals: 1. One is less than 2.5. Under 2.5 wins.
Under 1.5 goals – winning bet: Newcastle vs Wolves ends 1-0. Total goals: 1. One is less than 1.5. Under 1.5 wins.
Under 1.5 goals – losing bet: Same game ends 1-1. Total goals: 2. Two is more than 1.5. Under 1.5 loses.
Over 3.5 goals – winning bet: Arsenal vs Man United ends 2-2. Total goals: 4. Four is more than 3.5. Over 3.5 wins.
Best Bookmakers for Over/Under Goals Betting
Does Extra Time Count?
No. Over/under goals bets are settled on 90 minutes plus injury time only. Goals scored in extra time in cup competitions do not count. If a match goes to extra time and finishes level after 90 minutes, only the goals scored in the first 90 minutes (plus added time) are included in the settlement.
Over/Under Goals in Accumulators and Bet Builders
Over/under selections combine naturally with other markets in both accumulators and bet builders.
In accumulators: You can combine over/under legs from different matches in the same way as any other selection. An acca of Over 2.5 goals across four Premier League games multiplies the odds of each leg together. All four legs must land for the acca to win.
In bet builders: Pairing over/under goals with other selections from the same game – such as a match result, anytime goalscorer or both teams to score – is one of the most common bet builder approaches. For example, combining Over 2.5 goals with Both Teams to Score gives you a short-priced same-game multi, or combining with a correct score market gives you a higher-odds speculative builder.
See our bet builder tips and both teams to score tips for daily selections across these markets.
Over/Under Goals Beyond the Full Match
Bookmakers also offer over/under markets broken down by half, by team and by player:
First half over/under goals – only goals scored in the first 45 minutes count. A useful market when you expect an early-game burst from one side or a cagey second half.
Second half over/under goals – only goals in the second 45 minutes count.
Team over/under goals – rather than both teams combined, this market is for one specific team. For example, Man City to score Over 1.5 goals means City alone need to score 2 or more.
Player over/under goals – a player-specific market, most commonly Over 0.5 goals (the player to score at all) or Over 1.5 goals (the player to score twice or more). These are popular as bet builder legs. See our anytime goalscorer tips for today’s player scoring predictions.
How to Pick Over/Under Goals Bets
Over/under is a data-driven market. The result and who wins are irrelevant, which means you can focus entirely on goal-scoring patterns.
Average goals per game. Look at both teams’ goals for and against this season. A team averaging 1.8 goals scored and their opponents averaging 1.4 conceded gives you a rough total expectation of 3.2 goals – leaning towards the over on a 2.5 line.
Home vs away splits. Most teams score and concede at meaningfully different rates at home versus away. Always check which team is at home before using season averages.
Recent form. A team averaging 2.5 goals per game over the whole season might only be averaging 1.2 in their last five matches after a tactical change or key injury. Recent form often outweighs season-long averages. Using expected goals (xG) data gives you a clearer read on underlying threat levels – see our xG guide for how to apply it.
Head-to-head records. Some fixtures consistently produce goals; others consistently do not. Derby matches and local rivalries often trend towards lower-scoring games due to heightened defensive intensity. Check the last five to ten meetings for a pattern.
Team news. A missing first-choice striker or an injury to a key creative player significantly affects goal expectation. Always check confirmed team news before placing. Late team news can also cause odds to move – waiting for confirmed lineups before placing can give you better value.
Weather and pitch. Heavy rain and a wet pitch slow the game down and typically reduce scoring, particularly in lower leagues. Worth factoring in for outdoor stadiums.
Tactical context. A team with nothing to play for in the final weeks of the season, or a side playing a must-win game at home, will approach a match differently. Motivation and game state affect how many goals get scored.
Over vs Under – Which Is Better Value?
Recreational punters overwhelmingly bet the over because it is more exciting – more goals mean more to cheer for. Bookmakers know this and price the over slightly higher to attract under money. This means the under is often fractionally better value than the odds imply, particularly in matches with more evenly matched teams or strong defensive sides.
That said, the value depends entirely on the specific match. There is no universal rule that under bets are always better. The question is always whether the odds on offer reflect the actual probability of the outcome.
Over/Under and Whole Number Lines
Some bookmakers offer whole-number over/under lines – for example, Over/Under 2 goals rather than 2.5. In these markets, if the match ends with exactly 2 goals, the bet is a push and your stake is returned. This is similar to how Asian handicap 0 works in the match result market. Most UK bookmakers default to .5 lines to avoid this, but it is worth checking the market rules if you see a whole-number line. See our draw no bet guide for more on how push bets work.
Over/Under Goals FAQs
What does over 2.5 goals mean?
Over 2.5 goals means you are betting that three or more goals will be scored in the match in total by both teams. If the match ends 2-1, 3-0, 2-2 or any score with three or more goals combined, the bet wins. If it ends 1-0, 0-0, 1-1 or 2-0, the bet loses.
What does under 2.5 goals mean?
Under 2.5 goals wins if the match ends with two or fewer goals in total. Scores of 0-0, 1-0, 0-1, 2-0, 0-2 and 1-1 all result in a win. Any score with three or more combined goals loses.
Does the result matter in over/under betting?
No. Which team wins is completely irrelevant. Only the total number of goals scored by both teams combined matters. A 2-1 home win and a 2-1 away win are identical for over/under purposes – both have 3 goals and both result in an over 2.5 win.
Does extra time count for over/under goals?
No. Over/under goals bets are settled on 90 minutes plus injury time. Extra time goals in cup matches do not count.
What is the most popular over/under line?
Over/Under 2.5 goals is the most popular and widely available line. It sits close to the average number of goals per match in the Premier League and most top European leagues, making it roughly a 50/50 proposition on most games.
Can I combine over/under bets in an acca?
Yes. Over/under selections from different matches can be combined in an accumulator just like any other market.
What does over 1.5 goals mean?
Over 1.5 goals wins if two or more goals are scored. Only a 1-0 win or a 0-0 draw will cause this bet to lose. It is the most likely of all over/under lines to win and therefore has the shortest odds.
What does over 3.5 goals mean?
Over 3.5 goals wins if four or more goals are scored. This requires a high-scoring game and carries correspondingly longer odds than over 2.5.
