1:30 Carlisle — Opportunity (NAP)

The opener from Carlisle on ITV is a 1m3f handicap.

This looks a good opportunity for OPPORTUNITY NAP to get his head in front. An eye-catching third at Ascot on reappearance, this unexposed 4-year-old looks sure to improve for it. He’s trained by the right man in William Haggas to continue to improve, and I have no doubt he’s better than his current mark. His rivals don’t look to have much in hand, and the Wathnan Racing-owned favourite can end up in the winners’ enclosure here.

1:45 Beverley — Urban Glimpse

The first race from Beverley is a handicap over an extended 1m1f.

I expect URBAN GLIMPSE to come forward for a seasonal return that he looked badly in need of. The unexposed 4-year-old ran some crackers last season during his three-year-old campaign, chasing home high-level handicaps, finishing a good second on two occasions. A return to that level of form or anywhere near it would put him bang there in this weaker race.

2:00 Carlisle — Rousing Encore (EW)

Next up at Carlisle is another handicap, this time over the 6f trip.

It is ROUSING ENCORE EW I’ve landed on in here. An in-and-out sort but on his day he is more than capable of winning off his current mark. He’s a horse that needs plenty of luck in running, and that’s exactly what he didn’t get last time out at York. He was travelling strongly sitting off the pace but just didn’t get the breaks when he needed them. A similar set-up beckons here and hopefully the breaks come. If they do, I’d expect him to be flying home and hit the frame at least. He deserves one of these handicaps.

2:15 Beverley — Crystal Queen (Hilary Needler, Listed)

We head to Beverley for the listed 5f contest for 2-year-old fillies known as the Hilary Needler.

I think CRYSTAL QUEEN can run a big race here for Richard Fahey. There was plenty of promise on her racecourse debut at Ayr where she finished second in a three-runner race, but the winner looks a good horse too. She looked like she’d come on a bundle for that experience and the yard does well with their 2-year-olds so it’s interesting she comes here on her next start instead of a maiden. She is open to plenty of improvement and she’ll do for me at the price in this tricky contest.

2:33 Carlisle — Redorange (Achilles Stakes, Listed)

The Achilles Stakes comes up next at Carlisle. Another listed race over 5 furlongs.

The one for me is REDORANGE. He was a decent sprinter at three last season, and he looks to have stepped forward again as the yards often do for a winter on their back. Second on seasonal reappearance at Newcastle, he was well-backed, suggesting connections were hopeful he had come forward. He then duly obliged at Windsor last time out, where he looked the winner throughout the race and did it cosily in the end. Buick takes the ride, and I think he’s the one they have to beat.

2:48 Beverley — Ronson (EW, Two Year Old Trophy)

The 2:48 from Beverley is the Two Year Old Trophy again over 5f.

I think RONSON EW looks a big price in this. Both career runs have come at Beverley, and that can’t be a negative given the unique nature of the track and the fact these 2-year-olds in here are completely inexperienced. That angle was proven as he was very green on debut and looked in need of the run, as he looked a little lost on this sharp 5f. However, he came back here on his next start and put that course experience to good use to win a novice race. He travelled strongly into it and showed a decent turn of foot to win by 5 lengths in decisive fashion. If he can come forward again and use that experience, he can run a huge race at a big price.

3:10 Carlisle — Waardah (Lester Piggott Stakes, Group 3)

The 3:10 from Carlisle is the Group 3 Lester Piggott Fillies Stakes over 1m3f.

At the prices on this ground I’d prefer WAARDAH. The Owen Burrows-trained 4-year-old had a progressive three-year-old campaign last season, winning two decent races at Goodwood, including the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes on the latter. Well backed that day, it’s obvious connections think a lot of her. Things didn’t quite go to plan on Champions Day at Ascot on her final start, but I’m happy to forgive that given it was the end of the season and she just didn’t run her race. I’m hopeful she can improve this season, and she can give Estrange a lot to think of on seasonal reappearance as she’s likely to come on for the outing.

3:45 Carlisle — Crest of Fire (EW, Silver Bowl Handicap)

The final race live on ITV is the competitive Silver Bowl Handicap over the mile.

The one for me in here is CREST OF FIRE EW. A consistent 2-year-old who was unlucky on several occasions last season and, despite not winning, I wouldn’t consider him not genuine. His final start was a fine second behind an improving sort who went on to win his next two starts after that. He’s returned to action winning an easy race at Southwell by 10 lengths. Despite beating nothing, it won’t have done his confidence any harm and off the same mark, he can run well again here.
