13:30 Epsom — Tattenham Corner Stakes (Group 3) 7f

Tip: Ten Bob Tony (each-way)

The opener on Derby Day is the Tattenham Corner Stakes, a Group 3 contest over the 7f trip.

I think TEN BOB TONY EW can bounce back to form here for the Ed Walker yard. The yard are in decent nick at the moment, and if on a going day, Ten Bob Tony is capable of going close at this level. He’s a previous Group 3 winner up at Haydock, and this race looks no stronger. The favourite Never So Brave is the one to beat, but he won’t want too much rain. The selection won’t mind a bit of cut in the going description, and he should be able to get a nice early position from stall 3. Hopefully he can come home well.

14:05 Epsom — Princess Elizabeth Stakes (Group 3) Fillies 1m+

Tip: She’s Perfect (Next Best)

Next up at 2:05 is the Princess Elizabeth Stakes, a Group 3 contest for the fillies over the extended mile.

I think SHE’S PERFECT NB is the best horse in the field on ability, and I think she has shown enough promise on her return at Goodwood, finishing 3rd in a listed contest. She was first past the post last year in the French 1000 Guineas so the ability is certainly there. She’ll come forward from her comeback effort after she missed the back end of last season due to an injury setback. Any improvement makes her the one to beat.

14:40 Epsom — Coronation Cup (Group 1) 1m4f

Tip: Jan Brueghel (NAP)

The first Group 1 race comes up at 2:40 and it is the Coronation Cup over 1m4f.

I find it hard to get away from the Ryan Moore and Aiden O’Brien duo in JAN BRUEGHEL NAP here. They’ve mastered this race in recent times, and they will bid to follow the same tactics they adopted in this last year when beating the re-opposing Calandagan. They went a decent pace last year and made it a stamina test and appeared to outbattle him on that occasion. I’d expect something similar here with Jan Brueghel and Lambourn likely to go forward and set a decent tempo. Calandagan is a doubt to run anyway, but any cut in the ground would weaken his potent turn of foot, and he may be left with too much to do given conditions. He’ll have big targets throughout the season, so if he does show up, it’s not the number one target for the year. For the selection, you’d argue it is.

15:15 Epsom — Epsom Dash Handicap 5f

Tip: Brazen Bolt (each-way)

The fast 5f Epsom Dash handicap comes up at 3:15.

I’ve landed on BRAZEN BOLT EW here who will be well suited to this test. Impressive in the middle part of last season, winning at Goodwood and York in big 5f handicap sprints, things did tail off towards the end of the 2025 campaign. However, that was understandable, and he’s been back to his best in two runs this season. He was a fine second at Thirsk on return, and a close 7th at York doesn’t tell the whole story last time out. He ran well for a long time there. This speedy 5f will be right up his street, and I think he can outrun his odds and hit the frame at least.

16:00 Epsom — Betfred Derby (Group 1) 1m4f

Tip: Christmas Day (each-way)

The feature comes up at 4:00, the Group 1 Derby for the 3-year-olds over 1m4f.

I do think CHRISTMAS DAY EW may be underestimated in here. A good winner of the Ballysax Stakes on seasonal reappearance, he went to the Dante on his next start, and things didn’t really go to plan there, and he could only manage 4th. I don’t think the race was run to suit, and going up to 1m4f here on rain-softened ground will likely see a career best. He may be the one to make the running, and he shouldn’t be allowed too much rope in front by his opposition. That would be very dangerous and is a likely outcome. Even if that doesn’t happen, I think he will run a very good race. It’s a weak renewal, truth be told, and it looks a race to take a chance on one.

16:40 Epsom — 1m2f Handicap

Tip: York Tower (each-way)

The final race on ITV comes up at 4:40, and it is a 1m2f handicap.

I think YORK TOWER EW looks an obvious improver now entering handicaps off a mark of 78. The Williams Haggas-trained three-year-old sneaks into this off bottom weight after three pleasing runs where he did shape well. He now steps up in trip that looks sure to suit, and the stable are very good at bringing their horses along when they enter the handicap ranks. I’d expect more of the same here.

The Epsom Derby 2026 Explained

The Betfred Derby is the most prestigious Flat race in British horse racing — a Group 1 for three-year-old colts and fillies over 1 mile 4 furlongs at Epsom Downs. First run in 1780, the Derby was the inspiration for the Kentucky Derby, the Irish Derby, and equivalent Derby races across the world. It is the second leg of the British Triple Crown (after the 2,000 Guineas and before the St Leger), though a Triple Crown winner has not been recorded since Nijinsky in 1970.

The Epsom Downs course is one of the most demanding tests in the world. The mile-and-a-half journey climbs steadily for the first half mile, then takes the famously sharp left-hand turn at Tattenham Corner before the long downhill run to the home straight, finishing with an uphill climb to the post. The undulating nature of the course rewards balanced, well-bred horses with the stamina to cope with both the elevation changes and the camber.

The Coronation Cup, run earlier on the same card, is run over the same distance and uses the Derby as a benchmark for older horses (aged four and above). Last year, Jan Brueghel won the Coronation Cup for the Aidan O’Brien yard, with Henry’s NAP suggesting the same team can repeat their success.

Recent Derby winners include City Of Troy (2024, Aidan O’Brien), Auguste Rodin (2023, Aidan O’Brien) and Desert Crown (2022, Sir Michael Stoute). Aidan O’Brien has won the race ten times — the most successful trainer in modern Derby history.

Best Bookmakers for Epsom Derby Day Betting

For Epsom Derby day betting, three things matter most:

Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG) is essential, particularly on the bigger-priced selections in the each-way fancies. Take an early price on your pick and if the starting price drifts longer, you’re paid at the bigger odds. Betfred offer BOG from 7am on race day. See our Best Odds Guaranteed guide for the full list.

Each-way terms on the Derby. Most bookmakers pay each-way on the first three places in the Derby at 1/5 the odds. Some offer extra-place specials on the Group 1 — check before placing your each-way bet.

Acca insurance and Lucky 15 bonuses. With six live races on the ITV card across the day, Lucky 15s and accumulators add ongoing value. Betfred’s Lucky 15 bonus pays double the odds for one winner if all four selections run.

What is Henry Gibbs’ NAP for Saturday?
