With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching – hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico – there has never been a better time to test your England World Cup knowledge.
Harry Kane heads to North America as England’s captain and all-time leading scorer, having broken Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals. He already has nine World Cup goals across two tournaments – six in Russia 2018, where he won the Golden Boot, and three more in Qatar 2022, where England fell to France in the quarter-finals. A strong 2026 tournament could see him become England’s greatest ever World Cup scorer, threatening Gary Lineker’s record of ten goals across two tournaments.
England have been scoring at World Cups since 1950. More than 40 players have found the net for the Three Lions across the tournament’s history, from Geoff Hurst’s hat-trick in the 1966 final to Bukayo Saka’s goals in Qatar. Some of the biggest names in English football history are on the list. Some notable absences might surprise you – Frank Lampard, Paul Gascoigne and Kevin Keegan never managed a World Cup goal.
Think you know your England World Cup history? The quiz below contains every England World Cup goalscorer. A good score is getting half. Getting them all is genuinely elite-level England football knowledge.

England’s Top World Cup Goalscorers
While you recover from the quiz, here is a breakdown of England’s leading World Cup scorers of all time.
Gary Lineker – 10 goals (1986, 1990) England’s all-time top scorer at the World Cup. Won the Golden Boot in Mexico 1986 with six goals including a hat-trick against Poland. Added four more in Italia 90, most memorably in the semi-final against West Germany. His penalty miss in that shootout remains one of English football’s defining moments.
Harry Kane – 9 goals (2018, 2022) Won the Golden Boot in Russia 2018 with six goals including a hat-trick against Panama. Added three more in Qatar 2022. Heads into 2026 as England’s captain and all-time leading goalscorer with the chance to overtake Lineker’s record.
Geoff Hurst – 5 goals (1966, 1970) The only man to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final, his three goals in the 1966 final at Wembley secured England’s only major trophy. Added two more in Mexico 1970.
Michael Owen – 4 goals (1998, 2002) Burst onto the World Cup stage as an 18-year-old in France 98, scoring one of the tournament’s great individual goals against Argentina. Added three more in 2002.
Bobby Charlton – 4 goals (1962, 1966) Scored in Chile 1962 and was integral to the 1966 triumph, netting twice against Portugal in the semi-final.
