The first selection comes in the Jack Richards Novices Handicap Chase over the 2m4f trip.
The one for me is JORDAN’S CROSS (15/2). He comes into this contest with a progressive profile, winning five of his eight career starts over fences. One of the defeats, he was a last fence faller here at Cheltenham when looking like the most likely winner. He was a good winner here on Trials’ Day in a race that has always worked out well with the Festival in mind. He’s a strong stayer at the trip, so the likely decent gallop they’ll go in here will suit him well. I’d expect him to be staying on strongly up the hill.
3:20 Cheltenham
Our second selection comes in the Grade 1 Stayers Hurdle over the 3-mile trip.
There isn’t a lot of pace in this, and for that reason I’ll be chancing KABRAL DU MATHAN (9/2) who has a huge amount of ability and could be the one to beat should he last home. The Skelton yard very rarely gets it wrong when it comes to horses’ staying, and on a decent surface, I’ll put my faith in them. He was last seen powering up the hill in the Relkeel Hurdle over 2m4f last time out, so hopefully the trip won’t be an issue. I’m sure he’ll be travelling like the winner for a long way, and then he’ll have to answer the question as they jump the last. At the prices, I’d be happy to take that chance.
4:40 Cheltenham
We then head to the Pertemps Handicap Hurdle over the same 3-mile trip for our next pick.
I was taken by MINELLO SIXO (20/1) last time out when finishing second in a qualifier at Naas. He stayed on strongly there and appeared to relish the stamina test, doing all his best work late on. He’s trained by the right man for this race in Gordon Elliot, and in a race that can throw one up at a reasonable price, he’s the one I like.
5:20 Cheltenham
Our final selection comes in the finale on Day 3, the Kim Muir Challenge Cup over 3m2f.
I do like JERIKO DU REPONET (7/2), who looks to have been laid out for this. He has run well here at the Cheltenham Festival previously when finishing a good second in the Pertemps last year, and Cheltenham form always tends to repeat itself. He’s the choice of top amateur Derek O’Connor, and the cheekpieces go back on, which is where we’ve seen him at his best previously. I don’t think this is the strongest renewal, and he can defy top-weight with his class.
