Chris Sutton has filed his weekly Premier League score predictions for BBC Sport — and his takes for this weekend are genuinely interesting reading. The former Norwich, Blackburn, Chelsea and Celtic striker, who took over the BBC’s predictor mantle from Mark Lawrenson, has tipped Leeds to secure their Premier League survival, Tottenham to take another step toward the drop, and Arsenal to keep their slim title hopes alive at home to Fulham.
Here are Sutton’s full BBC Sport predictions for the matches across 2-4 May 2026, with a quick take on each.

Friday Night — Leeds Set for Safety
Sutton has Leeds down for a comfortable 2-0 home win against already-relegated Burnley at Elland Road on Friday night. He calls it the result that secures Daniel Farke’s side’s Premier League safety, praising what he describes as an outstanding campaign — though he acknowledges last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea was disappointing compared to recent form.
The warning Sutton drops in is that Leeds need to take care of business here. With Tottenham and West Ham still to come on the run-in, a slip-up against Burnley would turn the final week into “squeaky bum time.” But he doesn’t expect that to happen — calling this fixture “as close to a gimme as you get” this season.
Saturday — Arsenal’s Title Race, Sunderland Bounce-Back
The Saturday afternoon centrepiece is Arsenal vs Fulham at the Emirates, and Sutton has the Gunners winning 2-0. He flags concerns that Arsenal aren’t free-scoring at the moment and aren’t clicking in the final third — but with the title race on the line and what he calls “Europe’s best defence” backing them up, he expects Mikel Arteta’s side to get the job done.
Sutton, who was at the Bernabéu for Radio 5 Live earlier in the week, reckons Arsenal were “mugged in Madrid” by referee Danny Makkelie in their Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico — and is hoping those decisions don’t compound on Tuesday.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Sutton goes Sunderland 0-1 at Wolves — backing the Black Cats to bounce back from their shocker at home to Forest. He describes Wolves as having looked like “a fish out of water” all season. Brighton 1-2 at Newcastle is the upset call, with Danny Welbeck tipped to score and finish as the Premier League’s top-scoring Englishman.
The Brentford vs West Ham clash gets a 1-1, with Sutton crediting West Ham’s momentum since the turn of the year while acknowledging Brentford were unlucky at Old Trafford on Monday.
Sunday — United-Liverpool Honours Even, Spurs Heading Down
The marquee Sunday fixture is Manchester United vs Liverpool at Old Trafford, and Sutton goes 2-2. He calls it impossible to predict, finding it odd that nobody is talking much about either club beyond their managers. Bruno Fernandes — Sutton’s “Portuguese Pied Piper” — gets singled out for his outstanding season, while Alexander Isak’s goal against Crystal Palace last week is flagged as significant for Liverpool. Salah looks unavailable.
Aston Villa vs Tottenham at Villa Park is a 2-0 home win for Sutton, who says Spurs probably need three from their last four to stay up — but reckons last week’s win over Wolves doesn’t generate real momentum given how poor Wolves were. He warns this defeat would push Spurs another step closer to a trip to his old club, Lincoln, in the Championship next season.
Bournemouth vs Crystal Palace earlier on Sunday is a 2-1 home win for Sutton, with the Cherries unbeaten in 14 league games and Palace’s focus likely shifted to their Europa Conference League semi-final.
Monday — Final Round of Predictions
Two Bank Holiday Monday games close out the round. Chelsea vs Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge gets a 1-1, with Sutton asking which Chelsea will turn up — the side that won the FA Cup semi-final, or the one that “downed tools” against Brighton in the defeat that cost Liam Rosenior his job. Forest, in contrast, are on a roll with Chris “the Woodchopper” Wood back up front.
Everton vs Manchester City at Goodison is a 1-2 to City. Sutton notes Manchester City arrive on six straight wins, and while Everton have made the Hill Dickinson awkward for visitors this season, City’s front four of Haaland, Cherki, Doku and Semenyo will eventually find a way. The result keeps maximum pressure on Arsenal in the title race.
Sutton vs Merson — Where the BBC and Sky Pundits Disagree
Sutton’s BBC Sport calls don’t always line up with Paul Merson’s Sky Sports predictions. The notable disagreements this weekend:
- Wolves vs Sunderland — Sutton goes Sunderland 0-1, Merson goes Wolves 1-0. A genuine split on the bounce-back narrative
- Bournemouth vs Crystal Palace — Sutton sees a 2-1 home win, Merson is full Bournemouth at 3-0
- Newcastle vs Brighton — Sutton tips Brighton to win 2-1, Merson goes 1-1
The two pundits agree on Leeds, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester United vs Liverpool. Worth comparing both sets of predictions before placing bets across multiple fixtures.
