Belgium vs Egypt Match Preview
Belgium’s golden generation’s last ride against a side that has never won a single World Cup match in three attempts. Seattle on Monday night and this one has all the ingredients of a fascinating opener. Do not let the odds fool you into thinking this is straightforward.
Belgium come into this tournament carrying the weight of what feels like a decade of underachievement. The most talented generation in their history, Courtois, De Bruyne, Lukaku, Doku, and the rest, have consistently promised more than they have delivered on the biggest stage. Group stage exit in Qatar 2022. Round of 16 at Euro 2024. Time is genuinely running out now and Rudi Garcia knows it. The good news is they have been in excellent form heading into this. Thirteen matches unbeaten, 29 goals in eight World Cup qualifiers, the most of any European nation, and back to back clean sheets against Croatia and Tunisia in their final warm-ups. De Bruyne has scored six goals in his last eight appearances for Belgium which is extraordinary output for a midfielder of his profile. Lukaku returned from injury to score against Croatia and looks sharp at exactly the right moment. There is real quality here when everything clicks.
But there are genuine concerns too. They drew twice with North Macedonia and Kazakhstan in qualifying. They conceded three goals in friendlies against the USA and Mexico in March. Their defensive structure without the ball can be disorganised and Garcia has not entirely solved that problem. Egypt, if they sit deep and hit Belgium on the counter through Salah and Marmoush, could make this very uncomfortable.
And that is exactly what Egypt will try to do. Hossam Hassan has built one of the most defensively disciplined sides at the tournament. They kept eight clean sheets in ten CAF qualifying games, conceded zero goals across six matches and held Spain to a 0-0 draw in their final warm-up. Salah turns 34 on matchday and arrives two goals short of Egypt’s all-time scoring record, fully aware this is almost certainly his last World Cup. That is a dangerous combination of motivation and quality. Marmoush at Manchester City gives them another legitimate attacking threat. Egypt have never won a World Cup match in three attempts, but this squad, on their day, can cause genuine problems.
Head to head, Egypt actually hold the historical advantage with three wins from four meetings, including a 2-1 friendly win over Belgium as recently as 2022. All friendlies, but it shows the Pharaohs are not intimidated by this occasion. The first-ever competitive meeting between these sides takes place in Seattle, and it is far less predictable than the odds suggest.
Belgium vs Egypt Bet Builder (12/1 with bet365)
| Bet Builder Leg | Odds |
|---|---|
| Belgium to Win | 8/13 |
| Over 2.5 Goals | 10/11 |
| Jeremy Doku to Score or Assist | 11/10 |
| Belgium -2 Corner Handicap | 1/1 |
| Combined four-fold (bet365) | 12/1 |
Belgium to Win @ 8/13
Belgium have the quality to get this done even against a well-organised Egyptian side. De Bruyne, Doku and Trossard behind a fit Lukaku gives them attacking options at every level, and their 29-goal qualifying campaign shows they know how to break teams down. Egypt have never won a World Cup match and while they will make this difficult, Belgium’s class across the pitch should ultimately be enough. Garcia’s side are on a 13-game unbeaten run and the motivation to finally deliver at a major tournament will be enormous.
Over 2.5 Goals @ 10/11
This one looks better value than it might initially appear. Belgium scored 20 goals across their last five matches and averaged over three per game in qualifying. They put five past the USA and seven past Liechtenstein in recent months. Egypt’s defensive record is impressive but was built against CAF opposition and the 0-0 with Spain in a friendly is not necessarily a benchmark. Belgium will get chances and lots of them. Egypt carry Salah and Marmoush who can hurt anyone on the counter. Three goals across this game at just under evens looks like real value.
Jeremy Doku to Score or Assist @ 11/10
Doku is Belgium’s most dangerous attacking weapon right now and the man most likely to unlock Egypt when they sit deep. His pace, directness and ability to beat defenders one on one gives Belgium something completely different and Egypt’s full backs are going to have a nightmare afternoon trying to contain him. He thrived under Garcia all season and has been one of the standout performers in Belgium’s recent run. An assist or a goal from Doku at just over evens feels like an almost certain addition to the builder.
Belgium -2 Corner Handicap @ Evens
Belgium racked up 14 corners in their final warm-up game against Tunisia and should dominate territory throughout this match. Egypt’s low block and compact defensive shape invites exactly the kind of wide play and crossing that generates corners, and with Doku and Trossard constantly looking to get in behind and around the Egyptian backline, Belgium should be earning corners at a healthy rate. Egypt are unlikely to pin Belgium back enough to threaten that handicap from their end. Evens for Belgium to earn at least three more corners than Egypt across 90 minutes looks like a solid value add to the builder.

Belgium vs Egypt Team News
Rudi Garcia has a fully fit Belgium squad to choose from. Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid) returns in goal after his Euro 2024 absence — major upgrade. Kevin De Bruyne (Napoli) anchors the midfield with Amadou Onana (Aston Villa) alongside. Jeremy Doku (Manchester City) and Leandro Trossard (Arsenal) provide the wide threat behind a fit Romelu Lukaku (Napoli) who scored vs Croatia in the final warm-up. Sporting defender Zeno Debast is in the squad but not expected to play this group stage match due to injury.
Egypt’s spine is built around Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) up top with Omar Marmoush (Manchester City) providing pace and directness alongside him. Goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy is set to start. Hossam Hassan will likely deploy his familiar compact 4-2-3-1 — low block, spring the counter through Salah and Marmoush. Saudi-based midfielder Mohamed Hamdy and Pyramids captain Mostafa Mohamed provide squad depth.

Final Prediction
Belgium should get the job done but not without a scare. Egypt will sit deep, frustrate and hit on the counter through Salah, who will be desperate to deliver on the big stage one final time. De Bruyne and Doku could provide the moments of quality that settle it for Belgium but this is closer than many are predicting.
