World Cup 2026 — Who Will Be the Top Goalscorer?

The World Cup is fast approaching, with excitement building across the globe as the world’s greatest players head to the USA, Canada and Mexico for the biggest competition. We’ve had a look at the top goalscorer market and looked at five players with a real chance, picking one who I think will win the ultimate striker’s accolade.

With the likes of Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, it’s a tough market to select a top scorer, but here are five players who I think will find the net aplenty in this summer’s competition.

My Top Pick — Harry Kane @ 7/1

Top World Cup Golden Boot Tip — Harry Kane (7/1)

Harry Kane’s World Cup top goalscorer odds are best at BoyleSports, where they are 7/1. That means a £10 bet returns £80.

The BoyleSports World Cup betting offer gets you a £40 free bet when you open an account and bet £10.

Bet on Kane at 7/1 with BoyleSports →

England’s Harry Kane is the second favourite to win the Golden Boot in the World Cup this summer, but I’m backing him to be the top scorer as my number one selection. At odds of 7/1, the England striker is a fantastic bet to score the most goals in the competition.

This season, the Bayern Munich man has scored 55 goals in 49 matches in all competitions in Germany, giving him an average of more than one goal per game. He also scored eight goals in eight matches throughout England’s World Cup qualification campaign, meaning he has scored eight goals in his last eight matches for England. If that form continues into the World Cup, there’s a good chance he will end up top scorer.

Given England are one of the favourites for the competition, I expect them to go far, and I think Kane will score a good amount of goals.

Kane is wearing the No 9 shirt for England at the 2026 World Cup — see our England World Cup 2026 squad numbers page for the full confirmed squad including Bellingham at No 10 and Saka at No 7.

Kylian Mbappé @ 6/1

World Cup Golden Boot Favourite — Kylian Mbappé (6/1)

France’s main man Kylian Mbappé is the favourite to win the Golden Boot this summer at odds of 6/1. France are second favourites to win the competition behind their neighbours Spain, and I do think the French will reach the latter stages of the competition, given the quality of their attack.

The key man in that front line is Mbappé. The Real Madrid striker has scored 41 goals in 41 appearances for Los Blancos this season, with 24 in 28 La Liga appearances. He has bagged six in his last six for France, including five in four qualification matches. In those four matches, he had 29 shots, an average of more than seven shots per game. Twelve of those 29 shots were on target, giving him an average of three shots on target per game in the qualifying matches.

That shows that France creates a lot of chances, and Mbappé is their main attacking outlet. There’s a good chance he will score a lot of goals this summer and finish top scorer again, following success in 2022. However, I have him slightly behind Harry Kane in my Golden Boot rankings.

Vinicius Jr @ 25/1 (each-way bet)

Each-way World Cup Top Scorer Tip — Vinicius Jr (25/1)

I think Vinicius Jr could have a big competition this summer, and at odds of 20/1, I think he’s well worth mentioning in this list for a World Cup each-way top goalscorer tip. Brazil could go deep into the competition, and he is their main threat going forward, as they don’t really have a standout striker in their ranks, with the likes of Richarlison, Matheus Cunha and Raphinha some of their other attacking outlets.

Vini Jr is the main man amongst those players for me, and I think he could bang in a good amount. They’re in a group with Scotland, Haiti and Morocco, all games they are favourites in, and they could get off to a flyer with some strong, high-scoring victories in the early stages of the competition.

He has scored 21 goals in all competitions for Real Madrid this season, so has had a decent season in front of goal. He makes it on to this list with an outside chance of winning the Golden Boot.

5 PLACES – PricedUp are paying 5-places on World Cup top scorer each-way bets so use them to bet on Vinicius Jr at odds of 25/1. The PricedUp World Cup betting promotion gets you £20 in free bets when you sign-up and bet £40, too.

Mikel Oyarzabal @ 16/1

Outside World Cup Top Goalscorer Tip — Mikel Oyarzabal (16/1)

Another player with a decent outside chance is Spain striker Mikel Oyarzabal at 16/1. The 29-year-old plies his trade with Real Sociedad in La Liga, in which he has scored 15 goals in 32 appearances this season. He has also scored four in six in the Copa del Rey, including one in the final as his side defeated Atlético Madrid on penalties to win the competition.

In his last seven outings for the national team, he has scored eight goals, including six in six throughout their qualification campaign. As favourites for the tournament, Spain should create a good amount of chances. As their starting striker, I expect Oyarzabal to have a lot of opportunities, and he seems to score plenty for Spain of late.

I think he’s earned his place on this list, and is a decent shout at 16/1.

Erling Haaland @ 14/1

Wildcard World Cup Top Scorer Pick — Erling Haaland (14/1)

As third shortest odds on this list, it seems wrong to have Haaland at the bottom of my pile. However, this is his first World Cup, and given Norway’s group, I think it’s unlikely they’ll go far in the competition. They’ve been given a hard task in the group stages, with France, Senegal and Iraq to face in Group I.

However, with 37 goals in all competitions for Manchester City this season, and an incredible 16 goals in eight qualification matches for Norway, he’s impossible to ignore when it comes to the Golden Boot conversation. If Norway are to turn it on and reach the latter stages of the competition, they’ll be heavily reliant on Haaland, and you’d expect him to be near the top of the goalscoring charts.

Betfred Top Goalscorer Offer — £2 in Free Bets for Every Match Your Pick Scores In

Betfred have launched a Top Goalscorer-specific promotion for the 2026 World Cup that pairs perfectly with the Kane, Mbappé or Vinicius Jr picks above: opt in and place a £10+ single bet (or £5 each-way) on a player in the Top Goalscorer market, and receive £2 in Bet Builder Free Bets for every 2026 World Cup match in which your player scores.

The offer is open to both new and existing Betfred customers — the qualifying window closes at 20:00 on Wednesday 11 June 2026, one hour before the tournament begins.

A £10 single bet on Harry Kane at 7/1 (which Betfred also offer, though BoyleSports lead the market) returns £80 if Kane wins the Golden Boot. Across a typical Golden Boot-winning run of 4-6 matches scored in, you’d accumulate an additional £8-£12 in Bet Builder Free Bets along the way. Across the historical Golden Boot record:

  • Mbappé 2022: scored in 6 of France’s 7 matches — £12 if the offer had applied
  • Kane 2018: scored in 4 of England’s 7 matches — £8
  • James Rodríguez 2014: scored in 5 of 5 Colombia matches — £10
  • Müller 2010: scored in 4 of Germany’s 7 matches — £8

That’s added value on top of the outright winnings if your player wins the Boot, and consolation value if they score multiple matches without winning. Penalty shoot-out goals don’t count — only in-match goals during 90 minutes plus extra time. For full terms and the opt-in route, see our Betfred World Cup Top Goalscorer Offer page.

Each-Way World Cup Golden Boot Tips at Bigger Prices

For punters wanting bigger prices than the 6/1 to 14/1 range of the Golden Boot favourites above, our each-way top goalscorer tips identify three value picks at 25/1 to 33/1:

  • Lautaro Martínez (Argentina) @ 25/1 — Inter Milan’s Serie A top scorer, primary penalty taker for Argentina, with a clear knockout path if Argentina defend their title
  • Julián Álvarez (Argentina) @ 33/1 — Atlético Madrid forward, second-tier Argentina attacker behind Lautaro but priced as a long-shot
  • Ollie Watkins (England) @ 33/1 — England’s back-up centre-forward to Kane, with the upside if Kane misses a match through injury or rotation

PricedUp pays 5 places on World Cup top scorer each-way bets, which makes the larger prices materially better value. For full analysis on Martínez, Álvarez and Watkins including each-way maths and historical precedent, see our each-way top goalscorer tips.

Historical Golden Boot Context

The Golden Boot is settled on goals scored, with assists as the first tie-break. Historical context worth knowing:

YearWinnerCountryGoalsTournament Stage Reached
2022MbappéFrance8Final
2018KaneEngland6Semi-Final
2014RodríguezColombia6Quarter-Final
2010MüllerGermany5Semi-Final
2006KloseGermany5Semi-Final
2002RonaldoBrazil8Winner

The Golden Boot winner has been from a nation reaching at least the quarter-finals in every recent tournament — confirming the importance of backing a player whose nation goes deep. The all-time tournament record is Just Fontaine’s 13 goals for France in 1958. Miroslav Klose holds the all-time World Cup goalscoring record across multiple tournaments with 16 goals — see our World Cup top scorers of all time page for the full historical list.

For 2026, the 48-team expanded format adds an extra Round of 32 — meaning the Golden Boot winner will likely need to play (and score in) up to 8 matches if their nation reaches the final, compared to 7 in previous tournaments. That theoretically increases the goal-scoring ceiling for deep-running nations’ top forwards.

World Cup 2026 Top Goalscorer FAQs

Who is the favourite for the World Cup 2026 Golden Boot?

Kylian Mbappé (France) is the bookmaker favourite at 6/1, with Harry Kane (England) at 7/1 best price with BoyleSports. Jake Gray makes Kane the top pick based on his eight-goals-in-eight qualifying campaign and England’s kind Group L draw.

What odds is Harry Kane to win the World Cup Golden Boot?

Harry Kane is 7/1 with BoyleSports — the standout price across the UK market. A £10 single bet on Kane returns £80 if he finishes as the tournament’s top scorer.

How many goals does the Golden Boot winner usually score?

Recent Golden Boot winners have scored between 5 and 8 goals across the tournament. Mbappé won the 2022 Golden Boot with 8 goals. Kane won 2018 with 6. Müller (2010) and Klose (2006) both won with 5. The expanded 48-team 2026 format with an additional Round of 32 may increase the winning total marginally.

Does the Golden Boot winner usually come from a deep-running nation?

Yes — every recent Golden Boot winner has been from a nation reaching at least the quarter-finals. That makes backing a player whose nation has a credible deep-tournament path more important than backing the highest-scoring forward at club level. Norway (with Haaland) face a tougher group than England, France or Spain, which is why Jake places Haaland behind Kane and Mbappé in his rankings despite Haaland’s higher club goal volume.

Are penalty shoot-out goals counted for the Golden Boot?

No. Goals scored in penalty shoot-outs do not count toward the Golden Boot. Only goals in regulation 90 minutes plus extra time are counted in the goalscoring totals.

Who has won the most World Cup Golden Boots?

Three players have won the Golden Boot multiple times in different formats of the award. The Golden Boot in its current form was first introduced in 1982 — no player has won it twice in the modern era. Mbappé in 2026 would be the first player to win the modern Golden Boot in consecutive World Cups.

How are Golden Boot tie-breakers settled?

If two or more players are level on goals at the end of the tournament, the first tie-breaker is assists (set up most goals). If still level, minutes played — the player who scored their goals in fewer minutes wins.

What is the Betfred Top Goalscorer offer?

The Betfred Top Goalscorer offer pays £2 in Bet Builder Free Bets for every 2026 World Cup match in which your selected Top Goalscorer pick scores a goal. Place a £10+ qualifying bet on the Top Goalscorer market between 09:00 on 1 June and 20:00 on 11 June 2026. Open to new and existing customers. See our Betfred World Cup Top Goalscorer Offer page.

Are there each-way Golden Boot tips at bigger prices than Kane and Mbappé?

Yes — our each-way top goalscorer tips cover three picks at 25/1 to 33/1: Lautaro Martínez (Argentina), Julián Álvarez (Argentina) and Ollie Watkins (England). PricedUp pay 5 places each-way on World Cup top scorer, making the bigger prices materially more attractive.

Has Cristiano Ronaldo ever won a World Cup Golden Boot?

No — Cristiano Ronaldo has played at five World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022) and scored in all of them, but has never finished as the tournament’s top scorer. At 41, the 2026 World Cup is widely expected to be his last realistic chance — though most bookmakers don’t have Ronaldo in the Golden Boot frame given Portugal’s group K opener fixtures.
