Day Three of York’s Ebor Meeting is headlined by the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes, and our Friday tip is Mission Central to win the five-furlong feature — the NAP of our card, which also includes a selection for all five ITV races.
Aidan O’Brien’s sprinter drops back to the minimum trip and can regain the winning thread. Below are our tips for every televised race on Day 3 at the Knavesmire.

13:50 York – Mile Handicap: Welbury (EW)
We take a chance that Welbury can handle a significant step up in class and complete his hat-trick, and he’s worth an each-way interest.
Ed Bethell’s charge has taken his game up a level this season since winning an all-weather novice at Southwell in March, twice finishing runner-up in handicaps before a slightly below-par effort over further at Musselburgh. He’s since struck back-to-back wins at Pontefract and Redcar, the latter by seven lengths. That form may not be the strongest on offer, but the Ardad gelding looks to be improving for the application of headgear and could take another step forward here.
14:25 York – Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup Stakes (Group 2): Carmers
Carmers remains a high-class performer despite slightly underperforming this campaign, and Paddy Twomey’s stayer can get back on the winning trail.
A three-time winner last term including the Group Two Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, the Wootton Bassett colt was runner-up in the Great Voltigeur here before a creditable fifth in the St Leger, where soft ground may have been against him. He was better on his reappearance when landing a Listed contest at Navan over this trip, and while the extended distance of Ascot’s Gold Cup may have stretched his stamina, he didn’t run badly in sixth. That’s very solid form, and dropping back to this trip he has every chance to bounce back.
15:00 York – Gimcrack Stakes (Group 2): Adaay Of Scarlett
Adaay Of Scarlett has been knocking hard on the door at this level, and the day could finally arrive for Hugo Palmer’s colt after a string of runner-up efforts.
The Mehmas colt won his first two starts, including a valuable Ascot novice, before finishing second at Sandown, Ascot, Newmarket and Goodwood — the last three at Group Two level, including the Coventry Stakes and, most recently, the Richmond Stakes, where he went down by just a length. He should stay competitive, and with cheekpieces applied for the first time to eke out any further improvement, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him go one better here.
15:35 York – Nunthorpe Stakes (Group 1): Mission Central (NAP)
Mission Central faded late over six furlongs in the July Cup last month, but Aidan O’Brien’s charge had won his three previous starts over the minimum trip and is worth chancing to regain the winning thread — the NAP of our card.
The No Nay Never gelding won twice at Listed level at Naas before beating Rayveka by a head in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot, finishing strongly from off the pace. Though he has won over six furlongs, he looks better suited by this shorter trip, so the drop back to five furlongs is no surprise. This is usually run at a strong pace, which will suit him, and he can get back on the scoresheet.
16:10 York – Assured Data Protection Handicap: Master Vintner (EW)
Master Vintner arrives in good order, and it’s worth chancing the Mastercraftsman gelding each-way to give another good account in this slightly deeper race.
Ralph Beckett’s charge won twice last term and has continued his progression this season, better for his reappearance with a brace of runner-up efforts at Kempton over the summer. Fitted with blinkers for the first time, he regained the winning thread with a solid defeat of Golden West at Thirsk, and if the headgear has the same effect he could go in again. A 5lb rise and the step into a Class 2 handicap demand further improvement, but his latest run hinted there’s more to come, and he can make his presence felt.
Our Day 3 NAP: Mission Central
Our strongest bet of the day is Mission Central in the Nunthorpe Stakes (15:35). A Royal Ascot winner over the minimum trip dropping back to five furlongs for this Group 1 sprint, with a strong pace to aim at, he’s the highlight of our Friday card. As always, it’s a tip based on his form and profile, not a guarantee.
