3:45 Hamilton — EBF Novice Stakes (Class 2) 6f
Brian Healy’s Tip: MIND THOSE STEPS
Mind Those Steps shaped with promise on debut at Ripon and Tim Easterby’s charge can build on that first experience to get off the mark at the second attempt.
Three lengths’ third behind Pageant Girl in that debut run, the Pinatubo colt was green early but improved as the race progressed and there could be better to come on the back of that effort, given that she’ll likely have learned plenty from the run.
The form of that debut isn’t anything great, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see her step up on her debut to go close here.
3:56 Naas — Owenstown Stud Stakes (Listed) 7f
Brian Healy’s Tip: EXPANDED
Expanded found only a resurgent The Lion In Winter too strong on his seasonal return at Leopardstown last month, and Aidan O’Brien’s charge can go one better here for me.
The Wootton Bassett colt didn’t progress as hoped last term, having rounded off his juvenile campaign with a runner-up effort in the Dewhurst and struggling during a light season in Group company. However, he almost took advantage of the drop in class on his return when beaten just a half-length by his classy stablemate, and a repeat of that effort could be good enough here.
He’ll surely strip fitter for that reappearance, and he faces nothing of the calibre he came up against last time. With Ryan Moore now onboard, there look to be strong chances of him going one better this time around.
4:15 Hamilton — Save Our Bets Handicap (Class 4) 6f
Brian Healy’s Tip: MARCELLINUS (E/W)
Marcellinus looks to have improved this year, given his cosy victory at Bath last month, and Tom Dascombe’s charge can take another forward step here.
Placed on all three runs last term as a juvenile, the Showcasing gelding struck at the first time of asking this campaign with a ready victory over Red Snapper on his handicap debut, scoring by two lengths, and the third horse home has subsequently boosted the form with a win next time out.
This will be tougher off 7lbs higher, but the race ought to be run to suit him, and he may prove suited by this stiff track. Another big run could be on the cards for my money.
4:26 Naas — Coolmore Fillies Sprint Stakes (Group 3) 6f
Brian Healy’s Tip: VELOZEE
Velozee has looked like a potentially smart filly in the making, and Paddy Twomey’s charge can land her hat-trick despite taking another step up in class.
The Sioux Nation filly won a soft-ground maiden on her debut at Cork back in May, and she took a big step forward when impressively beating What A Girl Wants in a Listed contest next time out at the Curragh, scoring by three lengths.
There’s almost certainly better still to come from her, and the step up to six furlongs may well unlock another level. This is tougher upped to a Group 3 and taking on some well-regarded types; however, she looked one to keep on the right side of last time out, and she can win again if she continues her improvement.
4:45 Hamilton — Extra Places Handicap (Class 3) 1m5f
Brian Healy’s Tip: SAVROLA (E/W)
Savrola went from strength to strength over longer trips last term, and Dianne Sayer’s charge can resume his progress on his seasonal return to action.
The Churchill gelding won twice from five starts last term, including on his first run of the campaign and then in the competitive Northumberland Vase. Between victories, he twice finished runner-up here, and he rounded off his season with another good second behind Rock N Roll Pinkie.
He’s just 1lb higher on his return to action, and he’s proven he can go well fresh — having won at the first time of asking last season. He’s also shown this course layout and likely underfoot conditions to be no issue. The York run he signed off with last term has seen several subsequent winners come out of the race, and I’d expect him to make his presence felt again here.
4:56 Naas — Goffs Lacken Stakes (Group 3) 6f
Brian Healy’s Tip: CHARLES DARWIN
Charles Darwin stepped up on a promising debut to win all three of his subsequent starts, and Aidan O’Brien’s charge continued in form to make a winning reappearance last month in a Listed contest at Navan.
The No Nay Never colt counted the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot among his haul of prizes, and although not seen out again last term, he showed the absence to be no problem when winning a shade comfortably on his reappearance.
That return to action will have sharpened him up, and he’s back at six furlongs for the first time since scoring over the trip on his second career start last April — so stamina won’t be an issue. He can take the return to Group company in his stride to double up for the season.
5:15 Hamilton — Build A Bet Handicap (Class 3) 5f
Brian Healy’s Tip: ALPHA MAGIC (E/W)
Alpha Magic won over six furlongs here last month during a light campaign and should strip fitter for a decent reappearance run when fourth behind Veblen Good at Pontefract last month.
Mick Easterby’s charge had also won on debut at Thirsk, and he helped to set a fierce gallop at Pontefract in that return where he only gave way late in the day and finished around two lengths adrift of the eventual winner, having made the running. The runner-up that day did little harm to the form when running second again in a valuable contest at Chester earlier in the month.
The Ardad gelding should come on for that reappearance, and the fast pace he set that day could see him hard to catch if he sets off at similar speed over this minimum trip. He’s also back on the mark he won from last June and is reunited with the winning jockey, so he could go well here — although it is a slight worry that the stable haven’t had a winner for some time.
5:26 Naas — Sole Power Sprint Stakes (Listed) 5f
Brian Healy’s Tip: LADY IMAN
Lady Iman has her sights significantly lowered ahead of her seasonal reappearance, and the Starman filly can get back to winning ways here.
Ger Lyons’ charge had looked progressive last term, winning four of her first five starts which included a Listed race over this course as well as a Goodwood Group 3 when taking the Molecomb Stakes. She had finished runner-up in a Group 2 at the Curragh before that victory.
However, she failed to land any sort of blow in the Nunthorpe behind Asfoora, and she had an excuse when disappointing in the Flying Childers, having been found to have bled from the nose. She’s been given plenty of time, and she could prove a different proposition now on her return.
She gets weight from all but one of her rivals here and, easing back in class, her form of last season entitles her to go close. She can make a winning reappearance for me.
5:45 Hamilton — Price Boosts Fillies’ Handicap (Class 3) 1m1f
Brian Healy’s Tip: SEREN STAR
William Haggas enjoyed plenty of success with his northern raiders at York during the week past, and he can continue to collect with Seren Star, who can resume winning ways.
A three-time winner last term, which included over course and distance, the Profitable filly was last seen disappointing in testing ground in a French Listed contest. She had shown herself to be progressing nicely prior to that run, and she is perhaps best forgiven that lesser run.
All three wins last term came on better ground, and she’s back in a handicap where this mark could prove within her scope. With previous course form to call upon, she can get back on track for a trainer who has a decent record with his runners here.
6:15 Hamilton — For The Fans Handicap (Class 4) 6f
Brian Healy’s Tip: THE GOOD BISCUIT (E/W)
It might be worth chancing The Good Biscuit, who won three times last term during a very busy campaign. Ruth Carr’s charge has maintained his good spell into this season with three placed efforts.
The Sixties Icon gelding last tasted success at Catterick in October when scoring under a penalty from Monsieur Kodi, and Warren Fentiman’s 3lbs claim effectively puts him on the same mark here.
His most recent start saw him beaten just over one length by Rosenpur at Chester on conditions not dissimilar to these, and a repeat ought to see him competitive again — although it is worth noting he flopped badly on his last run here. But given how he has started this season, he looks worth chancing to post a big run.
6:45 Hamilton — Apprentice Handicap (Class 4) 1m3f
Brian Healy’s Tip: LETSBEFRANK
Letsbefrank won on his seasonal reappearance at Musselburgh last April, and Jim Goldie’s charge might be worth chancing to go in again — although the Frankel gelding isn’t the most consistent and may just as easily turn in a shocker.
Winless last term and often running below his best, he showed what he’s capable of when getting the better of re-opposing Fast Fred on the first Sky Bet Sunday Series card at Musselburgh last month, scoring by a neck under this rider. He travelled well into the race and found a strong late burst to run down the eventual runner-up late on.
He is effectively 4lbs worse off with the runner-up after jockeys’ claims are factored into the weights, so he’ll have a job on his hands to uphold the form. But he has won from higher marks in the past and he might be worth sticking with on the back of that latest victory.
