The World Cup qualifier play-offs are here, and Ireland travel to face Czech Republic in this semi-final, as both sides look to secure the dream trip to the World Cup in June of this year.

Czech Republic have done fairly well over the last year, with six wins in their last 10 fixtures in all competitions. In the World Cup qualifiers, they have won five games out of eight, finishing second in Group L behind Croatia.

Ireland finished second in their group behind Portugal. They won three, drew one and lost two of their six matches played, and finished only three points behind the group winners, and two points ahead of Hungary in third.

Key Stats — Czech Republic vs Republic of Ireland

  • Czech Republic have won six of their last 10 matches and finished second in their qualifying group behind an unbeaten Croatia side
  • Patrik Schick scored four goals in six World Cup qualifying appearances and averaged just under two shots on target per game, with 11 in total
  • Tomas Soucek made 19 fouls in eight qualifying appearances for Czech Republic — an average of more than two per game
  • Ireland scored nine goals in their six qualifying matches and have won each of their last three fixtures
  • Czech Republic scored 18 goals in eight qualifying matches, including a 6-0 win over Gibraltar in their last outing
  • Ireland conceded seven goals across six qualifying matches, keeping two clean sheets

Czech Republic Form and Match Preview

Czech Republic have done fairly well over the last year, with six wins in their last 10 fixtures in all competitions. In the World Cup qualifiers, they have won five games out of eight, finishing second in Group L behind Croatia.

Ivan Hasek’s side arrive into this playoff in solid form and with home advantage at the Fortuna Arena, where the crowd will be fully behind them in pursuit of a World Cup place. Their qualifying record — five wins from eight, 18 goals scored — demonstrates an attacking threat that should cause Ireland problems, and Patrik Schick’s return to form makes them particularly dangerous in the final third.

Republic of Ireland Form and Match Preview

Ireland finished second in their group behind Portugal. They won three, drew one and lost two of their six matches played, and finished only three points behind the group winners, and two points ahead of Hungary in third.

Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side arrive in impressive recent form, having won their last three matches against Hungary, Portugal and Armenia — results that demonstrate genuine quality and belief. However, travelling to Prague for a World Cup playoff is a different proposition entirely, and the Czech Republic’s home advantage, combined with their attacking firepower, means Ireland will need to be at their very best to take anything from this fixture.

Czech Republic vs Republic of Ireland Betting Tips

Best Bet Builder Tip — Czech Republic to Win — 49/50

I fancy Czech Republic to overcome the Republic of Ireland in this World Cup qualifying play-off match. They have won six of their last 10 matches and came second only to a very strong Croatia side, who didn’t lose any of their eight group matches. Ireland have won each of their last three, with wins over Hungary, Portugal and Armenia all being very impressive. However, this match at the Fortuna Arena will be incredibly difficult, and I think the Czech Republic will be too strong for them, and are good odds for the win.

Both Teams to Score — 19/20

With what’s up for grabs here, both sides will be right up for it from the off, as they look to keep their World Cup dreams alive. With that, I think both teams to score is a great bet at 19/20. Ireland have scored in eight of their last 10 matches, scoring nine in their six games played in their World Cup qualifying group. They conceded seven goals in those six outings, keeping two clean sheets. Czech Republic have scored 18 goals in their eight qualifying matches, with their last match being a 6-0 win over Gibraltar. They conceded eight goals in that time. I think both teams to score is a solid shout in this one.

Patrik Schick Over 0.5 Shots on Target — 1/3

Bayer Leverkusen man Patrik Schick is good odds to have one or more shots on target this Thursday at 1/3. The 30-year-old is having a decent season in Germany, with 15 goals in his 34 appearances in all competitions. In the World Cup qualifiers, he has scored four in six for his country, with 11 shots on target. That gives him an average just under two shots on target per game. There will be plenty of chances here, and I think he will have a minimum of one on target.

Alternative Bet — Patrik Schick to Score (7/4)

Four in six is a decent return for Schick throughout qualifying, and I think 7/4 is pretty handsome odds for him to get on the scoresheet here. Swapping a shot on target to a goal for Schick boosts the odds of this bet builder to 14/1 with bet365.

Tomas Soucek Over 1.5 Fouls — 5/6

We all know Tomas Soucek loves getting stuck in, as we watch him regularly in the Premier League for West Ham. He has picked up four cards in the Premier League this season – three yellow and one red – while collecting one in the FA Cup and one in the EFL Trophy for the under 21s. He made 19 fouls for his national side in his eight qualifying appearances, giving him an average of more than two per game. I expect him to make a couple here.
