Scotland vs Morocco Match Preview

It’s a huge game for Steve Clarke’s men on Friday night as they take on a very strong Morocco side. A point might be enough for Scotland to progress through the group stage for the first time, following their opening game victory over Haiti. Morocco were held to a 1-1 draw by Brazil.

Scotland flattered to deceive against Haiti, but managed to hold on to their 1-0 victory despite some pressure from the Haitians. John McGinn’s 28th-minute goal was enough to ensure three points from that first game, and they’ll be hopeful of a result here to carry them through to the knockout stages.

Morocco were impressive against Brazil, especially in the first half, and could have come away with all three points. Many think this fixture will be the harder of Scotland’s remaining two, as they face Brazil in their last group match. Morocco haven’t lost since early August, when they were defeated 1-0 by Kenya.

Best Bet Builder Tip — Both teams to score @ 6/5

This is a huge game for both sides, with Morocco looking to pick up their first victory, and Scotland looking for at least a draw that would be enough to take them through to the next round. With that in mind, I think both teams will be up for it from the off, and I think they’ll both score. I expect Steve Clarke to be more pragmatic in the way he sets his side up on Friday, and I think he will move away from that 4-4-2 formation that was deployed against Haiti. I expect we’ll see one up front for Scotland, with five in midfield or five in defence, as they look to be more solid defensively against a stronger side in Morocco. Morocco are strong going forward, and caused Brazil a lot of problems, and they’ll do the same against Scotland. I think they’ll score, but I also think Scotland could just as easily catch them on the break, and with goalscoring midfielders such as Scott McTominay in the side, I wouldn’t bet against them scoring in this one either. 6/5 is great odds for both teams to score here.

Scott McTominay over 0.5 shots on target (6/5)

With Scotland likely to move to one up top, it’s also likely that McTominay will play closer to the striker. He loves to make late runs into the box when Scotland have the ball in wide areas, as we seen against Haiti when he rattled the post in the early stages of the game. I think we will see plenty of that here as Scotland try to hit Morocco on the counter, and I think there’s a great chance McTominay will have one or more shots on target, following his two shots in the first game. He had six on target in Scotland’s six World Cup qualifying matches, giving him an average of one per game, and I think 6/5 is good odds for him to have one against Morocco.

Brahim Diaz over 0.5 shots on target (6/11)

The second player I’m backing to have one or more shots on target is Morocco’s Brahim Diaz. The Real Madrid winger managed just two goals in Spain last season, but he’s one of Morocco’s main threats in attack, and I think he will cause Scotland a lot of bother. In the opening match against Brazil, Diaz has a total of three shots, one of which was on target, and he also assisted the goal to put Morocco one up in the game. Throughout qualification, he scored one (with his only shot in the group matches) and assisted two. I think he will have a good amount of joy against Scotland here, especially with the support of Hakimi down the right hand side, which could cause Andy Robertson a whole lot of bother. I think there’s a great chance of Diaz having one or more shots on target.

Andy Robertson to be booked (15/4)

Andy Robertson is Scotland’s captain, representing his country at their first World Cup since 1998, and plays with more passion than many a player I’ve witnessed. For that reason, I think there’s a great chance of him picking up a booking in this crucial game for Scotland. As I mentioned, he faces a tough task against Diaz and Hakimi on the same wing, and I think they’ll force him into making a number of fouls as he looks to stop crosses into his box. He picked up only one booking for Liverpool last season, but has made two fouls already in the World Cup, in that opening fixture against Haiti. He’s determined to see his country through to the knockout stages for the first time ever, and that coupled with the difficulty of his direct opponents in the wide area, is good enough reason for me. I think 15/4 is great odds for him to pick up a booking in this one.

Scotland vs Morocco Team News

Scotland: Steve Clarke likely to shift from the 4-4-2 deployed against Haiti to a more defensively-orientated set-up — either 4-5-1 or 5-3-2 to contain Morocco’s attacking threats. Angus Gunn in goal. Andy Robertson at left-back, captain. Kieran Tierney likely in the back line with Jack Hendry and Grant Hanley as centre-backs. McTominay positioned higher up the pitch in the new shape. Lewis Ferguson and Billy Gilmour in midfield alongside John McGinn. Striker selection between Lyndon Dykes, Che Adams, or Lawrence Shankland.

Morocco: Tony Popovic — wait, that’s Australia. Morocco’s manager Walid Regragui likely sticks with the strong starting XI from the Brazil draw. Bono in goal. Achraf Hakimi at right-back (the standout danger Robertson faces). Centre-back partnership of Diop and Riad with Mazraoui at left-back. Ayyoub Bouaddi and Azzedine Ounahi in midfield (Bouaddi was outstanding vs Brazil). Brahim Diaz on the right wing with Bilal El Khannouss on the left. Ismael Saibari leading the line after his goal vs Brazil. Strong, settled team that nearly beat Brazil.

Alternative Bet — Brahim Diaz to score or assist @ 13/10

I’ve mentioned his assist in the first game and his two throughout qualifying, so we know he likes to chip in to help his teammates put the ball away. Taking him to either score or assist at odds of 13/10 increases the odds of this bet builder to 30/1 with Bet MGM.
