Haiti vs Scotland Match Preview
It’s a return to the World Cup for Scotland for the first time since 1998. Back then, they entered a group featuring Brazil and Morocco, the same as this time around. For now though, they have the task of an opening game against Haiti, the lowest-ranked side in the group by a distance.
Scotland come into this one with two convincing wins in their two World Cup warm-up matches – a 4-1 victory over Curacao at Hampden and a 4-0 win over Bolivia in New Jersey. They went a goal down to Curacao but recovered after a shaky start, but were convincing against Bolivia, going into half-time with that four-goal advantage already. They made changes in the second half and saw the game out comfortably, getting much-needed minutes into their legs.
Haiti’s two World Cup warm-up matches have told two different tales. They easily dispatched New Zealand 4-0 in the first one, but were beaten 2-1 by Peru in their most recent match. Many expect them to finish bottom of the group, and I agree.

Haiti vs Scotland Team News
Steve Clarke arrives with arguably the strongest squad available to him since taking charge in 2019, helped by key players being fully rested due to limited club minutes or recovery time. Ben Gannon-Doak provides genuine dynamism on the wings — the Bournemouth winger caused Bolivia significant problems in the most recent warm-up. Lawrence Shankland’s hat-trick of warm-up goals (two vs Curaçao, one vs Bolivia) has likely locked down a starting striker spot. Scott McTominay is in the form of his Scotland career after a transformative season at Napoli.
Haiti are missing several first-choice options through injury but field a competitive squad anchored by Angers full-back Carlens Arcus. Most of Haiti’s squad operate in lower-tier European leagues or the North American second tier — a clear quality gap to Scotland’s Premier League and top-five-league regulars.
Scotland to win (1/2)
I expect Scotland to get off to a dream start on their return to the world stage. Haiti are ranked 83rd in the FIFA world rankings, with Scotland 40 places ahead of them in 43rd. Scotland have prepared well, and will have been stateside for just under two weeks by the time they kick-off in their first match. That won’t allow them to be fully acclimatised to the conditions, but it’ll stand them in good stead. They had an impressive qualification campaign and, with this being their first World Cup in 28 years, they’ll want to get off to a flyer. They couldn’t have asked for a better start than coming up against Haiti. I don’t think it’ll be all plain sailing for the Scots, but I do expect them to get the win at odds of 1/2.
Best Bet Builder Tip — Lawrence Shankland to score (13/10)
Lawrence Shankland has done himself no harm in his claim for a starting spot in the opening fixture for Steve Clarke’s side. The former Hearts captain, who has recently penned a deal at boyhood club Rangers, has scored three goals in Scotlands’s two warm up matches, with two against Curacao and the opener against Bolivia on Saturday evening. He’s a classic striker who knows where the goal is, bagging 20 goals in 34 appearances for Hearts last season, as they narrowly missed out on the title. Scotland will create chances here, and I think Shankland is great odds to put one of them away.
Scott McTominay over 0.5 shots on target (1/2)
Scott McTominay is Scotland’s star boy. The former Man United midfielder has transformed his career since joining Napoli two seasons ago, and that has translated into his form for the national team too. His stunning acrobatic goal against Denmark to help Scotland qualify back in November will live long in the memory, but his impact goes far beyond stunning goals. He scored two in that qualifying campaign, and had six shots on target in six games, an average of one per game. He scored against Bolivia on Saturday, so is showing no signs of letting up. I think he will have at least one shot on target in this one.
Carlens Arcus to be booked (13/5)
Carlens Arcus is the man I’m backing for a booking at odds of 13/5. The 29-year-old plies his trade in Ligue 1 with Angers, where he picked up seven yellow cards in 26 appearances for the French side last season. He was also carded three times in his nine World Cup qualifying matches for Haiti. He will likely come up against Scotland winger Ben Shannon-Doak in this one, who caused Bolivia all sorts of problems with his pace on Saturday. He won one foul against the left back in that one, and the Bolivian seen yellow for the pleasure. I can see a similar situation here, as Gannon-Doak looks to drive at Arcus and get in behind. 13/5 is good odds for the full back to pick up a card here.

Alternative Bet — Scott McTominay to score (15/8)
Often occupying the position just behind the front line, McTominay gets a lot of chances in the dark blue of Scotland. With three goals in his last eight, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the scoresheet again here, and this is a solid alternative bet, taking the odds of this bet builder to 35/1.
